Through examples and guided discussion, participants will explore how ESL and content teachers can plan, teach, and assess together to ensure equitable access for English Learners.
Participants will also engage in a myth-busting exploration of second language acquisition, confronting common beliefs that often limit instructional practices. Behavior Is Communication: Building Strong Classroom Teams to Support Students with Autism and Diverse Support Needs
LIMITED
Wednesday August 12, 2026 9:40am - 10:40am EDT
Limited Capacity seats available
Supporting students with autism and diverse support needs is deeply meaningful work, but it can also be complex and demanding. Educators working in specialized classrooms often encounter students whose behaviors communicate unmet needs, sensory challenges, or difficulties with regulation and communication.

This session focuses on understanding that many student behaviors are forms of communication. When educators shift from simply managing behaviors to understanding what a student may be communicating, it can transform how teams respond and support student needs.

Drawing from their experience working together in autism and life skills classrooms within the SOAR program, a teacher and paraprofessional team will share practical strategies for building strong classroom collaboration and creating consistent, supportive environments.

The session will also explore how predictable classroom systems and meaningful choices can support student autonomy, independence, and self-advocacy.

Participants will leave with practical strategies for strengthening teamwork and creating environments where students feel understood, supported, and empowered to learn.

It's Not Just Misbehavior: The Why Behind Student Actions
LIMITED
Wednesday August 12, 2026 10:50am - 11:50am EDT
Limited Capacity seats available
All behavior is a form of communication. When students display challenging or problematic behaviors, it is often because they lack the skills to cope with the daily academic, social, and emotional demands of school.
In this professional learning session, we will explore how student behaviors—especially those connected to dysregulation—can impact teaching and learning. Participants will examine common problem behaviors, define what makes them challenging in the classroom, and uncover the “why” behind the behavior by considering student needs, triggers, and skill gaps.
We will connect behavior to students’ emotional and physiological states and discuss how dysregulation can show up across settings and grade levels. Educators will learn practical strategies to help students recognize their zone, build self-regulation skills, and return to a learning-ready state.
By the end of this session, participants will walk away with a clearer understanding of behavior as communication, increased empathy for student challenges, and actionable tools to support regulation, reduce disruptions, and get students back on track for success.
